What it is
Summer Work Travel is a category of the J-1 exchange program of the U.S. Department of State. It allows university students to work temporarily during their vacation period and experience cultural immersion.
If someone close to you is considering J-1 Work & Travel, this guide gives you the full picture: what ARCO does, what remains under the Designated Sponsor’s authority, how we prepare for a safer experience, what the price includes, and what happens before, during, and after the trip.
Spending a summer working in another country can open an extraordinary chapter. It also raises legitimate questions about safety, money, housing, visas and support.
ARCO makes the structure, limits and responsibilities of each party visible so that trust has a foundation.
Summer Work Travel is a category of the J-1 exchange program of the U.S. Department of State. It allows university students to work temporarily during their vacation period and experience cultural immersion.
It is intended for actively enrolled university students who have completed at least one semester and have enough English to function in an English-speaking environment. ARCO currently works with Mexican students ages 18 to 26.
Taking part means more than finding a job. It involves selection, preparation, interviews, regulatory approval, the consular process, and responsibilities throughout the season. ARCO manages that process; a Designated Sponsor formally authorizes participation within BridgeUSA.
The Designated Sponsor authorizes participation in the program. The consulate decides whether to issue the visa. The employer manages the job. ARCO plans and manages the participant’s experience across that system.
ARCO works on the participant’s behalf: selecting and preparing candidates, developing and evaluating job opportunities, obtaining and verifying work, housing, and transportation conditions, coordinating formal approval with the Designated Sponsor, and staying directly involved before, during, and after the program.
Retains regulatory authority. Evaluates and approves the participant, offer, employer and worksite; issues the DS-2019, monitors the program, ensures the required coverage is in place and provides a 24/7 emergency contact.
Manages day-to-day work, shifts, pay, and the conditions of the approved position. Must notify the Designated Sponsor of changes or situations affecting the participant. When a workplace issue needs attention, ARCO coordinates directly with the employer.
Decides whether to issue the visa J-1. No firm, sponsor or employer can guarantee that outcome.
Provides truthful information and meets deadlines, document requirements, payments and program rules. Maintains active communication with ARCO and their Designated Sponsor, reports changes promptly and takes part in decisions affecting their experience.
Unexpected situations are part of international exchange. ARCO starts working before departure and stays involved throughout the season: checking the arrangements, making sure participants understand critical information, staying in direct contact, and coordinating a response when something changes.
ARCO develops the opportunity with the employer, obtains and reviews the terms, prepares the participant, and puts together the application file for formal approval by the Designated Sponsor. That work happens before the participant travels.
Before departure, ARCO reviews where the participant will live, what it costs, the conditions, the commute to work, and who is responsible for the housing. Every participant leaves with a concrete plan they understand. If the employer does not provide housing, ARCO works with the Designated Sponsor and the responsible parties to find a workable option.
Before departure, ARCO confirms that the participant knows their coverage, the Designated Sponsor's 24/7 contact, employer contacts, 911 and the direct line to our team. We stay active during the season. In an immediate emergency, call 911 or the appropriate local service first; then inform ARCO and the Designated Sponsor.
ARCO takes the lead in managing the case: documenting what happened, contacting the responsible party, coordinating next steps, and keeping the participant informed until there is a clear way forward. Decisions reserved for the sponsor, employer, or a government authority remain with that party; ARCO coordinates with them to move the case forward.
Covers all of ARCO’s work and the Designated Sponsor fee for the program arrangements specified in your contract. The exact amount is provided in writing before you sign.
The program moves forward in stages. Each payment starts the next stage, which begins only after the payment has been confirmed and matched to the participant’s account.
SEVIS, the visa application and any other applicable government charges are outside the program price and are paid by the participant.
Flights, housing, food, personal transportation and everyday expenses in the United States are outside the program price.
Before signing and making the first payment, ARCO provides the total program price in writing, including what it covers, expenses that are excluded and the milestone schedule. Each payment activates a specific stage of the process. If a payment is not settled on time, the next stage does not begin and the delay may affect program feasibility. Cancellations and refunds are handled under the accepted contract and policy, taking into account the milestone reached, obligations performed and conditions applicable to the case.
For participants who meet their deadlines, document requirements, interviews and payments, ARCO guarantees a Verified Placement: a written offer that meets the agreed conditions, is accepted by the participant and has formal Designated Sponsor approval. If ARCO does not deliver it within the signed timeframe, the remedy set out in the guarantee applies. It does not guarantee a visa, a preferred employer or city, specific hours, continuous employment or recovery of the investment.
BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER
We assess where you are in college, your English, your goals, your adaptability, and your fit for the program. Meeting the requirements is the starting point; the full assessment determines whether moving forward makes sense.
We help you prepare as a candidate and get ready for interviews, develop job opportunities, organize your documents, and coordinate the process with the Designated Sponsor and consulate.
Before departure, we confirm that the participant understands their work, housing, transportation, coverage and contacts. During the season, we maintain direct communication, manage changes and bring in the responsible party when needed.
The participant is an adult. Their information is handled under the Privacy Notice and does not become an automatic family report.
ARCO can answer general questions and help the family understand the system. File and season details are handled directly with the participant and shared with family only when the participant authorizes it or an applicable obligation requires it.
THE STANDARD
No. The Designated Sponsor retains regulatory authority and issues the DS-2019. ARCO plans and manages the participant’s experience within that system: preparing candidates, developing and evaluating job opportunities, coordinating formal approval, and staying involved throughout the season.
Every international exchange involves real risks. With ARCO, the participant travels with a reviewed offer and worksite, a housing and transportation plan, required coverage, emergency contacts and direct communication with our team. If something changes, ARCO responds, organizes the case and brings in the sponsor, employer or appropriate authority. The participant does not face the program alone.
ARCO responds and leads the case. Even if a situation becomes complicated in the early hours, we document what happened, contact the responsible party, coordinate next steps and stay in touch with the participant. In an immediate emergency, call 911 or the appropriate local service first; ARCO then brings in the Designated Sponsor, employer or authority that needs to intervene.
Housing is not guaranteed to be identical, free, or supplied by the same provider at every destination. Before departure, ARCO reviews the location, cost, conditions, and commute. If the employer does not provide housing, ARCO works with the Designated Sponsor and the responsible parties to develop a workable plan that the participant understands.
The exact amount is provided in writing before signing and is not published as a universal figure on this page. The program price includes ARCO's operations and the Designated Sponsor fee for the contracted pathway. It excludes SEVIS, the visa application, flights, housing, food, personal transportation and living expenses in the United States. The milestone payment schedule and what each payment activates are also provided in writing.
No. The consulate decides the visa, and no responsible process can guarantee that wages will recover the program cost. The Verified Placement Guarantee covers only the outcome defined in the contract for participants who meet the agreed deadlines, document requirements, interviews and payments.
The participant is an adult, and their information is handled under the Privacy Notice. ARCO can answer general family questions, but file and season details are handled directly with the participant and shared with family only when the participant authorizes it or an applicable obligation requires it.
If a specific question remains, ARCO can review the facts and explain what we would do in that situation. If the program makes sense, the assessment starts with the participant.
